By tournament director, Tom Barker

The 2007 TSAA state JOAD was held in Victoria on June 16th and 17th.

The weather would just not give us a break. The tournament was stopped with two ends to go on the long distances on Saturday with a very violent thunderstorm coming in on us, and more forecast for the rest of the afternoon. The weather cleared about two hours later, but by then everyone was back at the hotel.

Everyone showed up at the venue early Sunday morning and we actually got practice started a half hour early at 8:30. We tried to start scoring at 9:00 but with one end of practice to go the sky opened up destroying a couple of easyup popup tents. It was just rain and wind, so we held everyone on the field for a good drenching. After about 10 minutes we started back up for one more end of practice only to have the storm that passed us, back up with lightning now. We cleared the field until 10:15. We then finished the two ends from Saturday, reset targets and then began the third distance. After two ends, a new storm moved in on the archers and the radar looked like it was going to last a couple of hours. So, at 11:15 the tournament director called the tournament. It was decided that even if the tournament could resume after two hours and then shoot for another 4 hours, assuming no more rain delays, by the time everyone finished with shooting and awards it would be 6 or 7. Many of the families had 7-9 hour drives ahead of them. No one complained. So, we went to the archery shop in Victoria and did the awards while it sprinkled. With the conclusion of the awards about noon, the sun came out and it was nice for the rest of the day.

Hunter Barthels and Joseph Human set a couple of state records for their shooting and I think the record for most rain delays was set also. Even though the event had to be shortened everyone seemed pleased to get back on the road and spend some of father's day not getting drenched.

Things the tournament director learned:
Everyone was very sympathetic and no one complained about his decisions.

Cell phones and lightning detectors are very valuable in thunderstorms, but not water resistant.

Easyup Popup Tents are storm magnets.

When there is a drought, schedule an archery tournament. The farmers and ranchers will love you.
